Running Capable 21C with MS Windows Vista™ and/or MS-Office 2007™ Professional

Abstract

MicrosofMicrosoft Windows Vista™ was designed (within reason) to be compatible with all its preceding successors, but with this new design some complications have occurred. Within this document you’ll find some of the issues Capable Software Pty Ltd has encountered with Microsoft Windows Vista™ and suggested resolutions.

Most of the problems found with Microsoft Windows Vista™ are a result of it’s updated security mechanism.

Underlying challenge challenges are posed below with resolutions interleaved

Resolution

I cannot perform a Live Update once Capable 21C is installed

  • Instead of double clicking to launch Capable 21C, Right Click on the Capable Icon and select Run as Administrator.
  • Login (if you are using login security) and Select yourself as an operator.
  • Click Live Update located in the Drop Down Menus.

I still cannot perform a Live Update once Capable 21C is launched

  • Click the Vista Start Button
  • Click My Computer
  • Double Click Local Disk (C:)
  • Double Click Program Files
  • Double Click Capable
  • Find EZUPDATE.EX_, right click and select rename.
  • Rename the file to EZUPDATE.EXE
  • Double Click on EZUPDATE.EXE to run.

Capable 21C is loading the database locally and not from the network location

Double clicking on the Capable 21C icon on the Desktop loads up Capable 21C in such a way that it ignores the Capable.ini file located in C:\Program Files\Capable.ini. However Right clicking on the Capable 21 Desktop Icon and selecting “Run as Administrator” properly accesses the INI file and therefore loads the correct database. You can change the way Capable 21C launches, to remove the need to Right Click and “Run as Administrator” every time you want to access it.

Add the location of the .ini file to the Desktop Icon. To do this:

  • Click the Vista Start Button
  • Click My Computer
  • Double Click Local Disk (C:)
  • Double Click Program Files
  • Double Click Capable
  • find the file Capable.ini
  • Right click on Capable.ini and select Copy
  • Click the Vista Start Button
  • Click My Computer
  • Double Click Local Disk (C:)
  • Double Click Capable
  • Right Click in an empty area in this window and select paste.
  • Right click on the Capable 21C Desktop Icon
  • Select Properties
  • After the text “C:\Program Files\Capable\Capable.exe” put the following text:

    “-p C:\Capable\Capable.ini”.

  • Then you can Double Click on the icon as normal, or Right Click on Capable 21C and select “Run as Administrator” if double clicking fails for some reason.

An Alternative to this challenge is the following:

  • Click the Vista Start Button
  • Click My Computer
  • Double Click Local Disk (C:)
  • Double Click Program Files
  • Double Click Capable
  • find the file Capable.ini
  • Right click on Capable.ini and select Copy
  • Click the Vista Start Button
  • Click My Computer
  • Double Click Local Disk (C:)
  • Double Click on the Capable folder
  • Right Click in an empty area in this window and select paste.
  • Right Click on the Capable 21C icon on the desktop and select properties.
  • Change the Working Directory to C:\Capable\

I updated the database to Access 2007 format, now when I load Capable 21C, it loads the old database or returns a Bad File or Filename Error (52).

While Microsoft Office 2007™ Professional is compatible with Capable 21C under both Windows XP™ and Windows Vista™, the format of the Microsoft Access Database has been updated. Microsoft Access™ is backward compatible with all previous versions of Microsoft Access Database’s (.mdb files) as long as the database isn’t upgraded to the new format.

When a database upgrade to MS Access 2007 is performed, a new copy is saved in the form of an .accdb file – Access Data Base file, which is NOT supported in Capable 21C. When the upgrade has completed, the original .mdb file will still be in it’s original location, so you can recover from this upgrade if you have performed it already. If you have somehow deleted the original .mdb file, then you will have no other option that to restore from a back-up.

Capable Software Pty Ltd is currently testing the new database format to be supported in later versions of Capable 21C.

Capable 21C will not access a database on a networked PC

There is a known problem with Windows Vista and Microsoft Access databases accessed via a network.  The following patch supplied by Microsoft will resolve the problem in many cases:
