Printing to two types of stationery

Abstract

Capable 21C can print many different types of reports, invoices and statements to different printers.  It can also print these different types of documents to the same printer (if that printer supports dual paper trays).  This article describes how to configure the printer drivers, and Capable 21C to support this kind of functionality.

Underlying challenge

Normally, when a printer is installed in Windows, it loads a single printer driver, with only one paper type selected.  As Capable 21C might require more than one kind of paper type to print on that printer, this kind of configuration will not work.  To configure Windows differently, refer to the resolution below.

Resolution

To perform these steps, the printer driver installation CD may be necessary.  These steps are of a slightly more technical nature, and may require the assistance of a PC Technician.

  1. Install the printer driver for the printer a second time.  This should result in the printer appearing twice in the Printers and Faxes section of the Windows control panel.
  2. Rename one of the two printer drivers to describe the print tray (or paper size) being used in that tray (eg Laser Printer Tray 1 A4).
  3. Rename the other printer driver to describe the second print tray (eg Last Printer Tray 2 A5).
  4. Start Capable 21C and go to Setup|Setup Printers.
  5. Nominate the desired printer driver for the appropriate kinds of stationery.

Detailed Information

Note that this technique can be used for triple tray printers as well.

Note that in a network environment, each PC will need the duplicate drivers installed, and the Capable 21C Printer Setup screen adjusted accordingly.
