Installing and migrating to a new PC

Abstract

Occasionally, due to a hardware failure, or equipment replacement, it may be necessary to migrate the Capable 21C installation to a new PC. This article describes the procedure to complete this requirement.

Underlying challenge

When Capable 21C is first installed, two key activities occur. The first is that the installation is stamped with a secret number that matches the database installed. This occurs when Capable 21C is first started on the PC. The second is that the default installation of Capable 21C must be Live Updated from the Capable Software Live Update facility within the first 50 times that Capable 21C is opened on that PC. By following the instructions outlined below, customers can migrate to a new PC and avoid any potential problems without having to perform a Live Update.

Resolution

To install Capable 21C onto a new computer. Perform the following steps:

  • Take a back-up on your old computer of the folder called C:\capable (if you are running a network, you need to back-up this folder on whichever machine has been defined as the server). Label this backup as your DATA BACKUP.
  • Take a back-up copy on your old computer of the folder called C:\Program Files\Capable. Label this backup as your PROGRAM BACKUP.
  • Install Capable 21C on the new computer from your original installation disk, using your original CD Key. DO NOT START CAPABLE 21C YET.
  • Restore the DATA BACKUP onto the C:\Capable folder on the new computer.
  • Restore the PROGRAM BACKUP onto the C:\Program Files\Capable folder on the new computer.
  • Now, start Capable 21C for the first time on the new computer.
  • Check you can access your patient/client files.
