Troubleshooting Invalid Filenames
Abstract
Certain features of Capable 21C interact with files either on the workstation PC
or on a server computer. It is possible that these external files can be
altered, moved or deleted independently of Capable 21C. When this happens,
Capable 21C may report an 'Invalid Filename' error with a code of 5152, or just
code 52. This knowledgebase article discusses how to diagnose these
problems.
Underlying challenge
The Invalid Filename error can occur for two reasons:
- The filename is valid, but the folder where the file should be located does not
exist. This can happen if a folder has been renamed (or if the folder
never existed). It can also happen if the folder resides on another
computer in a network, and that computer is temporarily uncontactable.
- The filename contains characters that are not permissible for Windows based
computers.
Resolution
If there was an opportunity to key the filename (eg setting up a mailmerge
template document, or the output from an advanced query), repeat the operation
using a simpler filename (eg. C:\TestFile.txt).
If there was no opportunity to key the filename, examine the office network to
see if network connectivity is failing. The easiest way to do this is to
close and re-open Capable 21C on each workstation in turn. If network
connectivity has been lost, the PCs will report such when Capable 21C is
re-started.
Detailed Information
If a problem such as this persists, contact Capable Technical Support for
assistance. Note that this kind of problem is typically not caused by a
defect, so a technical support contract may need to be in place for assistance
to be provided.
